Pan’s Labrinth Reflection

The watch symbolizes the father and his death. It is important because between what the Captain says “He didn’t own/have a watch” to what one of his soldiers said “The watch was crushed to show the time of death” . It brings thought to the audience of whether something might happen with the clock and the Captain- for example, if the Captain dies and the clock ends up getting smashed, just like they say happened to the father.

They keys all tend to lead to a treasure of some sort. For example; Mercedes giving the key to her brother to open the shed filled with medicine, food, and first aid. And for Ofelia, when she opened/drew the door to lead to the realm, she ended up using the golden key to open up a locked box.

Pan’s Labrinth Reflection

Pan’s Labrinth is not a typical Hollywood film because of all of the violence. It is far more than you would normally see in a Hollywood film and is even more graphic than many. A normal Hollywood movie the conventions are a protagonist and an antagonist who are against each other. However, in Pan’s Labrinth there is a type of connection between the Sci-fi and “fairy like” realm that isn’t seen in typical Hollywood films. There are some similar parts like when in Inglorious Bastards the heads were carved and there was quite a bit of violence. For example in Pan’s Labrinth a nose is bashed in.

Is this a typical Hollywood movie? Discuss.

First off, HECK NO! This is not a typical Hollywood movie! There is so much in this movie that is different from other movies! Although it's rated R the violence in the movie seems to be more unbelievable. It adds to the horror. Yes movies tend to have a lot of violence (Inglorious Bastards) But there is no way in heaven that I have seen something that violent in a Hollywood movie. So, NO, this is not a typical Hollywood movie.

-For the main character, she tends to "break" a lot of these. She rebells against what her mother says, she makes her own choices despite the consequences. But the Faun seems to take control of her. Like when he is in her room and gives her a root, telling her what to do for it to become human. He is controlling her in a way that causes her to not have much choice in that situation, knowing she would listen to him. 

-As for the doctor and the maid/main house taker they both rebel and make choices that could end in death. But they don't let that stop them. They are, just like the main character, Going against what the parent (or in this case) The captain has said. The captain is trying to find and kill the men in the woods, while the doctor and the house taker are trying to help them. 

-The one connecting part to Hollywood in this film that you see is; There is a girl who doesn't listen to a parent and goes on an adventure. There is a mother who doesn't believe in the things her door tells her, and who insists she stay and behave. There are co-leads, who are helping the lead and who are going against orders. (Watch one or both of them die). There are a lot of characters in this movie that are character personalties/figures that you see in other movies. The way they act or the way that they hold themselves/bring themselves forward.
